Vibrant Gold for Gallipoli: The scale of our war
1 July 2016
Te Papa’s ground-breaking exhibition Gallipoli: The scale of our war last night took out the Vibrant Gold category in the Wellington Gold Awards. The category recognises the very best of Wellington’s events, hospitality and visitor services.
Gallipoli: The scale of our war was developed by Te Papa working closely with Weta Workshop.
Te Papa Chief Executive Rick Ellis said the museum was proud to be part of Wellington’s vibrant creative community.
“The exhibition continues to have a profound effect on visitors of all ages,” Mr Ellis said.
The museum knew it had a duty to tell the story of Gallipoli with integrity, and took immense pride in the way the public had responded to the exhibition.
“From our hosts who share the exhibition with our visitors every day, to our security staff who watch over it by night, every member of the Te Papa team feels a huge sense of pride in the exhibition,” Mr Ellis said.
The exhibition has now had 821,380 visitors since opening in April 2015. It will be open until 2019.
Te Papa is also celebrating its busiest year since opening. A total of 1,784,939 people visited Te Papa between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016.
Rick Ellis said that popular exhibitions such as Gallipoli: The scale of our war and DreamWorks Animation: The exhibition had contributed to a stellar year.
“We know that Gallipoli is drawing in visitors from around the country who are coming to Wellington specifically to visit the exhibition,” Mr Ellis said.
“Te Papa is proud to play a leading role in attracting high tourism numbers for Wellington.”
“We are poised to see those numbers increase, particularly with an increase in visitors from China,” Mr Ellis said.
